　　你能坐视自己的儿子以绝食方式抗议至死吗？或者，你选择违背他的理想，拯救他危在旦夕的性命？本片是根据真人实事所改编而成的电影。故事是发生在１９８１年的英国，两名北爱尔兰青年因为一次预谋的抗争，不慎杀死一名英国士兵而遭逮捕。在苦牢内结识了共和军头目鲍比山德斯，有志一同，便决定集体发起绝食抗议行动，来抵制当时主政的柴契尔夫人。凯萨琳和安妮是这两个年青人的母亲，在先前毫无预警的状况下，亲生儿子被英国军人强行带走：到处奔走，只求儿子能平安返家，内心的痛苦无以言喻。不料，鲍比山德斯却先行成仁，眼见爱子为了完成志愿一天天的憔悴而至昏迷···
　　
　　《因父之名》的编导原班人马再度合作，以八一年制造了不少烈士的监狱大绝食为高潮，却把北爱冲突从街头带回了家中。传统上只配在背景为战士打气和哭泣的母亲，成了主动出击的主角。编导的政治立场毫不含糊，却胜在始终以人为本；章法严谨，剧力万钧。
