　　科里特好斯原本是一位医生，但他对犯罪思想的研究非常着迷。克里豪医师打算写一本关于犯罪行为的书，为了获得第一手资料，把发现有只有自己就是罪犯才能最好地观察和研究犯罪行为。于是，他犯下了几桩珠宝抢劫案，并因此结识了一帮由洛克·瓦伦蒂诺领导的抢匪帮。科里特好斯医生于是加入了他们，开始一起犯罪，并且详细地记录了他们的手法和心态。

　　就像好莱坞有很多优秀的电影都被有意地遗忘一样，《化身大盗》也是这样的一部电影，它在最近才被电影迷从迷雾重重的电影历史中发掘出来，重见天日，有一些影迷甚至认为本片比霍华德·霍克斯、弗兰克·卡普拉、弗里茨·朗等许多电影大师的作品都要好，这部影片的情节让人想起斯蒂文森的小说《化身博士》，但与《化身博士》不一样的是，本片中的医生并没有变成一恶一善的两个人，而是始终是一个人。从某种程度上看，本片也是在探讨精神与肉体的冲突问题，医生原本是为了医治生理的问题，他对犯罪行为的研究，又表明他对人类精神问题的关注。
