　　故事发生在位于法国富人聚集地的一幢公寓内，玛利亚（丽塔·布兰科 Rita Blanco 饰）是公寓的门房，转眼之间，她和身为建筑工人的丈夫约瑟（让-皮埃尔·马丁斯 Jean-Pierre Martins 饰）已经在这个与他们的社会地位格格不入的社区内居住了三十年之久了。
　　
　　公寓里人人都喜欢这对善良又热情的夫妻，尽管身份差异巨大，但彼此相处十分快乐融洽。一天，约瑟收到了一封意料之外的来信，在信中，约瑟成为了葡萄牙老家一份丰厚遗产的继承人，而回到故乡生活正是约瑟梦寐以求的事情。好事降临在了玛利亚和约瑟的头上，但公寓内的住户们却忧心忡忡，因为他们舍不得夫妻两人，当然，玛丽和约瑟也舍不得公寓内的一帮老朋友们。
