　　塞姆和女友兼搭档佩姬一同开了一家私人侦探所，尽管塞姆曾经是一名警察，身手敏捷，但微薄的收入却无以支付侦探所昂贵的开销。

　　塞姆的好友桑尼找到他，希望他可以协助追查一笔贩毒集团失踪的黑钱。塞姆在警局的时候曾经和这个贩毒集团的老板曼杜沙交过手，当初塞姆因爱上了曼杜沙的情妇安吉拉，并因在追踪曼杜沙的过程中造成大量人员伤亡被警局开除。事实上曼杜沙并没有死，他做了易容术，依旧逍遥法外。安吉拉向警方告发了曼杜沙，却从此不知去向。为了雪耻并赚得一大笔劳务费，塞姆同意帮助桑尼调查。

　　经过一番寻找，塞姆发现了安吉拉的行踪。他把安吉拉带回家，让佩姬好好看管。佩姬却因吃醋将安吉拉赶出了家门。塞姆发现桑尼受雇于曼杜沙，他已经不再是自己无话不说的好兄弟了。尽管塞姆对此很失望，但他还是决定将这件事一直查下去。

　　塞姆跟踪安吉拉找到了失踪的黑钱，此刻他接到曼杜沙的电话，他们绑架了佩姬。安吉拉使出浑身解数想要将塞姆留在身边，带着这笔巨款远走高飞。但塞姆却选择冒险救佩姬，尽管这个叽叽喳喳头脑简单的女朋友经常给他带来麻烦，但此刻塞姆发现佩姬才是自己最重要的人。

　　经过一场殊死搏斗，曼杜沙得到了应有的惩罚，安吉拉和曼杜沙的余党被赶来的警察抓获。塞姆悄悄扣下了赃款中的一部分以作为侦探所日后的花销。经历了这一切，他和佩姬的感情有了质的飞跃，两人开始了新的生活。
