　　1932年的经济大萧条时期，索诺拉姑娘被寄养在海伦姨妈家。就在姨妈准备把索诺拉送交政府抚养的前夜，索诺拉揣着一则马戏团招募跳水女郎的启事，离开了海伦姨妈的家。

第二天，索诺拉找到了卡夫团长，在卡夫儿子艾尔的努力下，索诺拉得以留下来干些体力活。在驯服一匹叫“闪电”的烈马时，爱火开始在索诺拉和艾尔之间升腾。而跳水女郎玛丽的意外受伤给了索诺拉一个表演机会。为了训练索诺拉的事，艾尔和父亲吵翻，离开了马戏团，前往亚特兰大。

卡夫向索诺拉说出烧信一事后，悄然死去。父亲的死让艾尔成了马戏团的接班人。然而，“闪电”的意外失蹄让索诺拉永久失明。然而，索诺拉在观众的欢呼和艾尔的关切下，跃身上马，完成了演艺生涯中最精彩的一跳。
