哈尔（杰克•布莱克 饰）的父亲竟然在临终前跟儿子说以后一定要找最美丽的女孩做终身伴侣。于是他开始上演追逐不同美女的戏码，可是他的相貌平平，遇到了不少挫折。早已过了而立之年的他仍不愿违背父亲的遗愿，直到他受到了某位专家的催眠，逐步改变他以貌取人的的毛病，他观赏美女的的眼光竟然开始了很大程度上的的下降，后来他甚至爱上了体重达到150公斤的露丝玛丽（格温妮丝•帕特洛 饰），哈尔全然不介意露丝玛丽笨重的身材，他感觉自己的女友是最善良的人，无可救药的彻底爱上了对方。
好友马里西奥不忍哈尔有个相貌如此不堪的女友，经想方设法要破除掉施用在哈尔身上的催眠术…
