对任何生活小事都吹毛求疵的纽约广告商尼尔·佩奇接待了一个打算做口红广告的顾客，尼尔等不及对方做决定便赶往机场。他要坐六点钟的班机飞到芝加哥同家人一起过感恩节。尼尔在机场碰到了粗俗的窗帘圈商人德尔·格里菲斯。德尔老是高声喧哗，且生活习惯也让人不敢恭维，尼尔对此十分厌恶。但由于售票员的疏忽，尼尔不得不同德尔坐在一起。芝加哥的暴风雪使飞机无法降落，便改飞威奇塔。晚上，尼尔又只得同德尔住在一个房间里。更糟的是，小偷深夜溜进了他们的房间，将他们的现金全部拿走，于是第二天他俩只得改坐火车，在火车出了故障后又换公共汽车。期间，尼尔终于发现：在德尔庸俗的服装、谈吐和生活习惯的表象下掩藏着一颗忍耐、宽容和善良的心。俩人间产生了亲密的关系和友谊。后来，他们租了辆车，因德尔无意将点燃的烟头留在车内而引起爆炸，大难不死的尼尔和德尔在附近的旅馆过了一夜，在两人要逃跑时，警察抓住了他们。德尔的妻子早在八年前就已去世，因此他根本无家可回，遂又找到尼尔。尼尔回到纽约，那个优柔寡断的客户还没做出最后的决定呢。
