　　An oil company is drilling in a small town and suddenly they face volcanic eruption. This seems a small event at first sight but soon it becomes clear that it is the start of a long chain of eruptions. Emily热衷于环保事业，被迫放弃儿子Caleb的抚养权，更失掉父亲对她的信任。更惨的是，在前分析员Matthew协助下查出父亲的石油钻井公司所订下的纪录是假的。其公司所利用的最新激光钻孔在探勘石油储藏区时，不小心碰触到地底深处的火山岩浆，引发海底板块移动，引发一座火山的爆发，造成的人命伤亡不计其数，Caleb更深陷灾难现场。更令Matthew担心的是，火山爆发只是一个开始，全球的火山将如骨牌效应般在同时间连串爆发，由黄石公园远至印尼山脉；而整个地球将被火舌吞噬，所有生物也难逃被灭绝的命运……
