在第九季中，一股政治狂热席卷了南区，Gallagher一家人也不会置身事外，他们要将正义掌握在自己手中。Frank发现政治竞选活动有利可图，于是决定为长期受到忽视的南区工人阶级代言。Fiona试图通过公寓楼来获得更大成功，用一场豪赌来平步青云，从此跻身上流社会。Lip开始照顾Eddie的侄女Xan……纯粹只是为了分散自己的注意力，让自己保持清醒。「同性恋耶稣」运动出现毁灭性的转变，Ian必须为自己的犯罪行为承担后果。Debbie为男女同工同酬而奔走疾呼，同时要为反对性骚扰而战（此情节对应当前全世界如火如荼的「#MeToo」女权运动），她的努力引出了一个出人意料的发现。Carl打算去读西点军校，还为此做了大量准备工作，但婚姻与军校生活无论如何是会有矛盾的。Liam离开了私立学校相对轻松的环境，必须学会一套新的技能才可以生存下去。Kevin和V意识到抚养双胞胎是一件要求很高的事情，Alibi酒吧也需要大量精力来打理，他们打算将酒吧转化成更具公益性质、更能激发社会意识的模式。Richard Flood被提升为第九季的常规演员，他在剧中扮演Fiona的新男友Ford，一位（多次给女同性恋捐献精子的）手工匠。在第八季结束时，Ford并不十分确定自己和Fiona的关系究竟如何定义。
